Reflection activity: Your own experiences with persuasive technology

To what extent has social media quietly invaded your life?

Reflection activity

Reread the quotes from Dasani and Siri:
“I got addicted, always checking my phone, obsessed with keeping my streaks, worrying that someone needed my attention 24/7.”
–Dasani, Age 16, Phoenix, AZ
“I remember one night specifically that was probably when I was at my peak of using [TikTok] when I just caught myself using it for a couple of hours without stopping.”
–Siri, Age 13, Cary, NC

🤔 CONSIDER:

Think about your own experiences on social media.
  1. Have you ever looked down at your phone and immediately gotten distracted without knowing why?
  2. Does Dasani’s experience feeling controlled by social media compare to yours?
  3. Does Siri’s experience passively using social media compare to yours?

I have gotten distracted so many times without knowing why.Sometimes I could be mindlessly scrolling on social media and the moment I look up 4 hours have passed and it only feels it's been 20 minutes.

My experience with social media is, When Im in class and I get a notification about something on social media i get distracted by it and opening up my phone to see what it is, also i spend way to much time looking at it instead of just paying attention in class.

1- Yes because I message my friends and they text back so I look at my phone.

2- No because I don't always stay on social media for people 24/7

3- no because I always check the time, if I stay on for too long I will go outside and play basketball

    1. I have been distracted by my phone without knowing many times when trying to get tasks completed.
    2. Dasani's experience of feeling controlled by social media relates to my experience because during and after the covid 19 pandemic, I gained the habit of scrolling on social media for extended periods of time.
    3. Although I do not relate to being constantly needed by people on social media, I do relate to checking notifications whenever they pop up, to get it out of the way.

Yes, Siri's experience exactly reflects my experience of using social media. It really distracts me everytime when I take my mobile phone. Meanwhile get notifications from these apps and I start to use them without knowing time passage.
